KOCHI: The students, teachers and former students of Maharaja's College organised a human chain on Thursday in protest against the government's move allowing the Kerala State Electricity Board to install two compact secondary substations on the Maharaja's College Stadium premises. Noted critic and Maharaja's College alumnus M K Sanu inaugurated the protest, with participants forming chains at the four corners of the famous venue.
Ernakulam District Sports Council president Sakeer Hussain, Maharaja's College Old Students Association general secretary Sunny Mathew, Maharajakeeyam convenor CICC Jayachandran and Prof C R Omanakuttan were among those who led the protest.
On the occasion, Sanu Master asked the government to desist from the move to take over the land belonging to Maharaja's College. He also administered a pledge to protect the ground.
The KSEB proposes to install transformers at two places within the compound, one near the Hospital Road at the southern end and the other at the north-eastern corner without affecting the sporting activities at the venue. However, the protesters fear that more land could be acquired for related projects in future.
